In the time it takes me to pull on my pants 343 firefighters, 75 policemen, men and women, and 2334 civilians gone; little kids hands, wives and lovers beds, driver's seats, bunks in the firehouse, seats on the rig, clothes in the closet, empty, kaput, gone forever.
Several minutes later sitting in a waiting room, I see the first tower collapse. It just comes down... woosh... like a controlled implosive demolition of an old building.

Photo book about Chicago fire fighters
For five years, author and photographer Alan “Jake” Jacobs has spent countless days and nights on the streets of Chicago as he was allowed entry into the close-knit groups of the city's fire fighters, sharing in the complexity, the quiet giving, the traditions, humor, pride, and the dedication. Motivated by 9/11 he set out to understand and explain the people and their work.

His new book, Thank God for These Guys: Chicago’s Firemen on the Job, featuring over 250 unique photographs representing the most intimate moments in the lives of these often invisible men and women, is available from MT Publishing and from Amazon.com.
